BLAKES
BLAKES

Pitchfork has praised the band's 'swampy guitars, twitchy rhythms, and power-pop vocal harmonies' of their self-titled debut album. Mixed and mastered by Martin Feveyear (Kings of Leon, Crooked Fingers), The Blakes recall the stinging catchiness of early Who, Kinks, and other spitfire rock bands.

The early influences of Garnet Keim (guitar, vocals) and Snow Keim (bass, vocals) were Hank Williams and Brian Wilson. The brothers busked all around North America, writing songs in hostels and motel bathrooms, finally ending up in Seattle. There they met animalistic, mesmerizing drummer Bob Husak and asked him to join the band. The trio hit the road and have been touring ever since. The band's debut album has finally arrived! Thirteen tracks full of chaotic and sensuous rock and roll like the regional hits 'Don't Bother Me,' 'Two Times,' and 'Streets.'

Allmusic says: With all of her strengths on display here, from humor and a strict reliance on substance over her own considerable instrumental virtuosity, to her canny compositional skill at writing balanced and nuanced, elegant works that add to the actual literature of the music, this baby trumps the Lost Chords quartet date (it's sort of amazing that's even possible) in all the right places, making it arguably the finest small group record Bley's ever made.

THE THEMBA GIRLS
BODE, ERIN

Last Thanksgiving, Erin and the band recorded with the “Themba Girls,” a South African girls school choir, in rural Dirkiesdorp as part of a project coordinated by LCMS World Relief and Human Care to raise scholarship support for needy students.
LCMS World Relief and Human Care is the mercy arm of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS), the church body where Erin has deep roots. Her late grandfather, J.A.O. Preus, once was president of the LCMS, one of the United States’ 10 largest Christian denominations. Like their father, Erin’s brothers also are LCMS church workers: Gerry, an instructor at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis; Chris, a pastor in Buffalo, Minn. Sister Katie is a homemaker in Minnesota, married to Pastor Eric Nelson.
Since returning from South Africa, Erin’s performances often include a mention of South Africa. 'I would like to give people the opportunity to learn more and to get excited about how they can be a part of helping out,' Erin says.

While it's music that has its roots in the jazz tradition, it's also forward looking. How else could it be, with players like Victor Lewis on drums, D. D. Jackson on piano and Dwight Adams on trumpet? asks Carter. The all-star cast, which also has James Genus on bass, includes guest appearances by Rodney Jones on guitar and Eli Fountain on percussion. The album is produced by Michael Cuscuna, who sensed a challenge to capture the sheer range of Carter's enormous talent and his mastery of jazz idiom, which he felt had not really been adequately represented on earlier albums.

CLARK,GENE

Title: Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers
Format: Compact Disc
Cat. #: SC 11188
Price: $16.98

On the first solo album by an ex-Byrd, Gene Clark doesn't stray too far from the nest. Cut in 1966 upon Clark's departure from the iconic L.A. combo, with current Byrds Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke forming the rhythm section, and spotlighting brothers Vern and Rex Gosdin, a pair of former bluegrass pals of Hillman's who chime in with sweet harmony vocals, Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers stands as one of Clark's supreme achievements. Add session guitarists Glen Campbell and Jerry Cole and future Byrd Clarence White and beautiful orchestration by Leon Russell to Clark's melancholy melodies and weatherbeaten voice and the result is a classic country-rock primer that sounded like nothing else in '67 and continues to astound and inspire today. Five unheard bonus tracks from the sessions only sweeten the deal of this eye-opening work.

DAVIS,BETTY

Her Story:

One can hardly imagine the genre-busting, culture-crossing musical magic of Outkast, Prince, Erykah Badu, Rick James, The Roots, or even the early Red Hot Chili Peppers without the influence of R&B pioneer Betty Davis. Her style of raw and revelatory punk-funk defies any notions that women can't be visionaries in the worlds of rock and pop. In recent years, rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweli to Ludacris have rhymed over her intensely strong but sensual music.

There is one testimonial about Betty Davis that is universal: she was a woman ahead of her time. In our contemporary moment, this may not be as self-evident as it was thirty years ago - we live in an age that's been profoundly changed by flamboyant flaunting of female sexuality: from Parlet to Madonna, Lil Kim to Kelis. Yet, back in 1973 when Betty Davis first showed up in her silver go-go boots, dazzling smile and towering Afro, who could you possibly have compared her to? Marva Whitney had the voice but not the independence. Labelle wouldn't get sexy with their 'Lady Marmalade' for another year while Millie Jackson wasn't Feelin' Bitchy until 1977. Even Tina Turner, the most obvious predecessor to Betty's fierce style wasn't completely out of Ike's shadow until later in the decade.

Ms. Davis's unique story, still sadly mostly unknown, is unlike any other in popular music. Betty wrote the song 'Uptown' for the Chambers Brothers before marrying Miles Davis in the late '60s, influencing him with psychedelic rock, and introducing him to Jimi Hendrix -- personally inspiring the classic album 'Bitches Brew.'

But her songwriting ability was way ahead of its time as well. Betty not only wrote every song she ever recorded and produced every album after her first, but the young woman penned the tunes that got The Commodores signed to Motown. The Detroit label soon came calling, pitching a Motown songwriting deal, which Betty turned down. Motown wanted to own everything. Heading to the UK, Marc Bolan of T. Rex urged the creative dynamo to start writing for herself. A common thread throughout Betty's career would be her unbending Do-It-Yourself ethic, which made her quickly turn down anyone who didn't fit with the vision. She would eventually say no to Eric Clapton as her album producer, seeing him as too banal.

In 1973, Davis would finally kick off her cosmic career with an amazingly progressive hard funk and sweet soul self-titled debut. Davis showcased her fiercely unique talent and features such gems as 'If I'm In Luck I Might Get Picked Up' and 'Game Is My Middle Name.' The album Betty Davis was recorded with Sly & The Family Stone's rhythm section, sharply produced by Sly Stone drummer Greg Errico, and featured backing vocals from Sylvester and the Pointer Sisters.

Her 1974 sophomore album They Say I'm Different features a worthy-of-framing futuristic cover challenging David Bowie's science fiction funk with real rocking soul-fire, kicked off with the savagely sexual 'Shoo-B-Doop and Cop Him' (later sampled by Ice Cube). Her follow up is full of classic cuts like 'Don't Call Her No Tramp' and the hilarious, hard, deep funk of 'He Was A Big Freak.'

Tragically, these days Betty Davis is dead broke, living in the Pittsburgh ghetto. For the first time, her critically adored first two albums are being lovingly re-mastered from the original master tapes by Light In The Attic Records to sound as ferocious and revolutionary as they did when they first sprung on an unsuspecting world in the early '70s. These reissues mark the first time that Betty will receive proper royalties for her music on CD.

In addition to the restoration of the incredible original cover art, the compelling and heartbreaking liner notes written by author and respected soul music scholar Oliver Wang (O-Dub/Soul Sides) include her second interview in many decades, making these essential reissues for any soul, progressive punk, or funk-rock collection.

REMASTERED Allmusic says: Recorded on December 3, 1963, The Freedom Book is a near perfect set of modern hard bop, ranging just far enough out there to feel fresh but retaining a strong lifeline to bop tradition.

VEGAS YEARS
EVERCLEAR

The Vegas Years is a compilation of cover songs by American Alterna-Rock band Everclear. Several of the tracks are new for this release, including 'Rich Girl' and 'Kicks'. While 'Our Lips Are Sealed' was originally recorded (and issued) in 1997, the version included on The Vegas Years is a newly-remixed version, featuring new guitar and keyboard parts supplied by current Everclear members Davey French and Josh Crawley. The album also features two live performances: 'Brown Eyed Girl', which the band recorded in studio form for Learning How to Smile, and '867-5309/Jenny', which became a regular show-closer for the band in 2004. The album features tracks recorded throughout the band's career, including a few tracks that were previously released as B-sides. 15 tracks. Capitol. 2008.

008 album from this Seattle based quintet. Fleet Foxes are, for lack of an imminently more marketable descriptor, a group trafficking in baroque harmonic pop. And the joy they derive in doing so is palpable.

This storied ensemble whose live show can feature up to 16 musicians at a time is the latest creation of Robert Harrison, bestknown as the leader of Austin cult-garage-heroes, Cotton Mather. GILLESPIE,DIZZY

Allmusic says: The audience at the 1965 edition was witness to one very special performance. By this time Gillespie and the core members of his current band had already been together for a few years, and while they had jelled to a point that all bands hope to reach, where their interactions become wholly intuitive, they were also open to new innovation.
